The Western Digital Mybook Studio is a very handy high capacity drive placed in a small enclosure. The drive uses 2 TB single Western Digital drives and is ideal for Mac users for storing videos, music and photos. The drive is available with four interfaces: USB, eSATA (a much faster type of connection which requires a separate cable and usually a card as well,) as well as FireWire 400 and 800 ports. The drive can connect to any model of Mac with these options- but it can be reformatted for use with Windows also.
The compact chassis that holds the drive is about 6.5 by 2.1 by 5.4 inches and the Studio comes with the silver color paint so that it will match the color of Macs. One unique and very useful feature is a vertical LED bar on the front panel which indicates how much space is left on the drive.
At the back side of the panel is found the power connector which provides the needed power to the drive. The interfaces are also found on the rear panel. Since the drive will be attached to the Mac, there are more utilities for the system on this drive. The drive has WD Anywhere backup which helps in getting back-up of files. When backup software is needed, as the drive does not have WD tools suitable for Windows, other drives like Seagate FreeAgent Desk can be looked for. The drive is available with more storage capacity of 2TB.
There is of course a manual power button but when the drive is used with USB or FireWire, it will get alerted and shut down if it finds any activity on the ports. The drive automatically turns on and off with the computer, a great feature typical in WD drives. Also, because of the Safe Shutdown feature, the drive does not get powered down until all the data is copied. The drive weighs about 4 pounds. The drive is also designed in such a way that it saves power by going into standby mode when it is not used for more than ten minutes continuously, and innovations using morse code prevent the drive from getting over-heated.
When tested by PC Magazine in Mac format, the drive was able to copy a 1.2 GB test folder in just 34 seconds when used with USB and it took 24 seconds when it was used with FireWire 800. When it was formatted for Windows use, it was carried out without any difficulty but took slightly more time. The price of the drive was slightly more than the Studio II but the advantage of Studio 2TB is the speed with which the data is copied.
Because all new Mac systems have FireWire800 and USB 2.0, any storage requirement can be met with the Western Digital Studio. Mac-based photographers and others who need more storage space and speed will love this drive.
